Recognition of Local Government within the Australian Constitution
for the past 160 years, local government has not been recognised under the Australian Constitution.
Being a part of the constituion guarantees and protects the critical role of local councils for the benefit of all communities.
Councils seek to formalise their place as Australia's legitimate third tier of government.
communities on a daily basis.
Today, there are 722 local government bodies in Australia
accountable to a diverse range of metropolitan, regional, rural and Indigenous communities. Of these bodies, 579 are regional/rural.
There are approximately 6,600 elected councillors in Australia with an average of just under 10 councillors per council.
One of the great strengths of local government is its diversity. The population and geographic size of councils differ
greatly. The largest local government authority by population is the Brisbane City Council with 900,000 residents. The average
council population is 26,400.
Local councils spend around $17 billion each year providing an increasingly broad range
of infrastructure, economic and community services to residents. In total, councils employ around 150,000 people.
Unlike
the state and federal governments - local government does not presently enjoy constitutional recognition. This significant
anomoly needs to be addressed.
do they ever clean out the curbside gutters & sespits(those{when uncleaned} filthy disease carrying
traps that catch the junk that runs down our streets when it rains.) NOOOO! do they ever give us deductions in our rates when
we mow the front greenstrip? NOOOO! we should all send them accounts for all those years we have mowed THEIR grass.
Look how many times the bastards have fined or attempted to fine home-owners / renters etc when putting
something on the grass strip, parking in drive-in areas to their properties, etc because they claim its their land, [WRONG!
WRONG! WRONG! it belongs to the Citizens of Australia] so if this is the case make them come and mow the front grass strip.
have you noticed the council owned greenbelts? yes most of them are like jungles.i say sack the lot of the
bastards and put in adminstrators, use the unemployed (work for the dole) under supervision to clean up all the council
areas and do the many works needed to be carried out.
Newcastle council NSW is responsible for the huge strom damage bill along with Hunter water for not upgrading/cleaning
the waterways/drainage systems that we pay through the nose for.
FOOTPATHS
ever notice the lack of footpaths in a lot of Hunter Valley/Newcastle council areas? (although
it is a common occurance throughout many Australian councils).
home owner and business owner rates are supposed to be used for footpaths, roads, parks etc
and the maintainance of, yet most of these are not maintained! take a look at your, footpaths and curb & gutterings.
many are cracked & broken, left unmaintained for many years.
